Moving to New York will be costly unless you are being transferred and your company is picking up the tab. First do some shopping around for moving companies. You will find that prices for moving companies vary a great deal. You will want to understand what types of services will be provided and what you are getting for your money. Remember, chances are you will get what you pay for. If you’re satisfied to pay a little less even though it might mean that a piece of china gets broken, that is valid. Shelling out the money necessary for absolute perfection will get expensive fast.

You will also want to be completely aware of the living costs associated with moving to New York. Property taxes in New York are among the highest in the country, so you will want to keep that in mind if you are looking to buy property. You will also want to consider childcare and education costs. Because of the high cost of living in New York, many couples who are moving to New York must hold two jobs in order to make ends meet. This makes the cost of childcare skyrocket. You will also want to consider education costs. While there are many good public schools in New York they tend to be concentrated in the areas that cost the most to live. Research the quality of the school district before moving, and budget private education into your living costs if you decide that the public schools do not meet your standards.
Finally, be prepared to add to your budget if you expect to maintain the same standard of living after moving to New York. Going to a movie will cost more, eating out will cost more, and having a drink after work will cost more. This is simply the reality of moving to New York, and doing the necessary budgeting before moving and getting settled in will make everyone more comfortable after the move itself.
